Hoowaki

Common Questions

Extruded microstructures

  • Is this surface treatment a coating? - No. Hoowaki forms microstructures onto surfaces millions or billions at a time, creating a durable treatment that does not require any new materials or expensive processes.
  • What size range do you work with? - Hoowaki creates features as small as 800 nanometers, up to hundreds of microns. Beyond that, other technologies are most cost effective.
  • What materials can you apply this technology to? - We work with most polymers, including polyolefins, silicones, fluoropolymers, rubbers and engineering polymers like polyphenylsulfone. For those interested in directly modifying your own tooling, we work mainly with tool and stainless steels, but we can add our surfaces to nickel, aluminum, copper, bronze and titanium tooling.
  • Can I use these surfaces on something that needs to be transparent? - Microstructures affect the optical quality of materials, so at this time Hoowaki does not recommend our surfaces for products that must be optically precise.
  • What if I'm interested in new performances for molded surfaces? - Give us a call: we have worked on molded products for the medical, consumer goods and automotive industries and would be happy to work on your application.
